Meet a few of the Volunteers who assist
patients at CancerCare Manitoba
An Important Message from
Volunteer Services
What a thrill it was to accept a cheque
for $13,000 presented by Brian LeClairs family in April. It was the
largest single donation we have received that was targeted specifically to
Volunteer Services. The funds were raised at last years Walleye Warrior
Marathon and are being used to support patient services provided by volunteers
at CancerCare Manitoba.
Early in 2004 I had the privilege of
meeting Brian and hearing about his dream to raise funds by hosting a fishing
marathon. He was passionate about the cause and sincere in his desire to have
the money raised go to direct patient services. During his five years at
CancerCare Manitoba, he had always appreciated the work that volunteers did in
providing him and other patients comforts that go beyond medical treatment. It
is such a fitting legacy that the marathon will continue in his name, and
that donations will benefit hundreds of patients each day.

5 year total reaches over $80,000 dollars.
Anglers, Volunteers, Sponsors
can all be proud. This total is quite an accomplishment.
In addition to this total, thousands more were awarded as
prizes to participants. Brian's wish was to be able to help
make a difference.
Brian LeClair
wrote this note about CancerCare Manitoba and the importance
of this event:
"I have seen small
children 4 or 5 years old, sick, and getting treatments
at Cancer Care that should have their whole lives ahead
of them, not putting up with cancer at their age. They are
what we need to help fight for. Make a difference."

Meet Theresa Hope:
Theresa
is a breast cancer survivor. She credits a great deal to the support of her
family, friends and CancerCare Manitoba . "Everyone I encountered at CancerCare
was a wonderful resource and very supportive. They were my emotional and
spiritual backbone. My own personal 'worry warts' who gave me hopes."
CancerCare Manitoba is dedicated to finding an
earlier diagnosis and more effective treatment for breast cancer and has
advanced this goal with the opening of the new Manitoba Breast Cancer Research
Center. Every day we understand just a little bit more that brings the
community together and demonstrates the positive impact breast cancer research
has had and continues to have on the lives of women. FULL STORY |

Cancer survivors and their families can be a
positive influence in helping set research directions and priorities. It is
important for cancer families to remember that we all share the same goal - to
conquer cancer.

Meet Julianna:
Cancer hit the family of Mary
Bertone and her husband Terry Josephson and their children Nicholas (7 years
old) and Julianna (4 years old) on September 4, 2003 when Julianna was
diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. "Everything had been functioning
so well around us and at that moment all I could think of was that nothing
would ever be the same again." While they could only take one step at a time
and concentrate on the practical things, Mary Bertone was thankful for the
support of her family and friends at CancerCare Manitoba and the extraordinary
family of caretakers who were "compassionate, earnest and encouraging".
